Locality
The municipality of Ischia consists of the administrative center officially known as "Ischia" but also called "Ischia Porto", and the area of "Ischia Ponte", which owes its name to the wooden bridge (later covered in stonework) that has linked the Aragonese Castle to the village since the eighteenth century. Ischia is the most densely populated municipality, with many hotels and extremely popular among tourists. Its shopping centre goes from Via Roma to Corso Vittoria Colonna. Fun and nightlife on the picturesque "rive droite" (riva destra) full of night clubs, piano bars, country pubs, typical restaurants, local artisan shops and boutiques.
The Aragonese Castle in Ischia Ponte, a fortification that rises on small tidal rock islet, on the eastern side of Ischia and linked by a 200-meter stone bridge to the ancient "Borgo di Celsa", which is now known as Ischia Ponte. The first construction of the castle is dated back to the 474. B.C. under the name of Castrum Gironis, or "Girone Castle", in honor of its founder. The fortress was occupied by the Parthenopeans, but in the 315 B.C. the Romans succeded in taking control of the island and founded the Aenaria colony. We must give credit to the Aragoneses for the modern appearance of the castle. In the 1441, Alfonso V of Aragona ordered the building of a structure that resembled the Maschio Angioino of Naples.
The Pineta Mirtina, full of centuries-old majestic pines. The undergrowth is made of corbezzoli, heathers, euforbie, holm oaks, filliree, myrtles and brooms. Asparagus and mushrooms are also diffused, but the main attraction offered by the pinewood is a breathtaking stretch of cyclamens that flourishes along the path during the spring. The water vapour in the air of the pinewood reminds us of the volcanic nature of this place. This peculiar microclimate allowed many special vegetables to flourish exclusively on the Island of Ischia, such as the famous "Papiro delle fumarole" (Cyperus Polistachius). In the lower part of the pinewood there are some water springs, such as the Mirtina spring (its water was once bottled and sold), and a large area with a stage for summer festivals and concerts.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria dell'Assunta, situated in Ischia Ponte, is a monumental cathedral church of the Ischia diocese built by Pietro Cossa, brother of the antipope Giovanni XXIII, in the 1338 in honor of his dead father Giovanni, governor of Ischia and Procida.
The Cartaromana Bay and Sant'Anna rocks, from which it is possible to enjoy a breathtaking view on the Aragonese Castle. It is a famous bay with warm thermal-water springs flowing directly from the bottom of the sea.
Corso Vittoria Colonna is one of the main shopping areas of the island thanks to its many elegant boutiques, bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlors. It allows the tourists to enjoy long afternoon and evening walks tasting typical products, offered by the souvenir shops.
Riva Destra or Riva Droite owes its name to the fact that it lies on the right side of the harbour of Ischia. Extremenly poulated during the spring and the summer, it is full of bars, country pubs and restaurants where the tourists can taste delicious products and typical fish dishes.
