Locality
Ugento includes the fractions of Gemini, Torre San Giovanni, Torre Mozza, Lido Marini and Fontanelle. It is famous for its sandy caribbean-like coast, with a low presence of rocks and many artificial basins. The tourists will surely love the crystal-clear blue water, the bright sand and the intense green of the mediterranean scrub with its majestic olive trees. Torre San Giovanni and Torre Mozza are the two beach localities that owe their names to two of the many coastal towers of alento, and during summer they are populated by tourists from all over Italy. Gastronomy, hospitality, tourist facilities and equipped beach clubs make it the perfect place for a holiday full of fun, nature and culture.
Places to know and visit
Torre San Giovanni is considered the true marine of Ugento because of its proximity to the city and its common past with Ugento. Since the ancient times, the water of its harbor was fundamental for the messapian civilization development. Its characteristic tower is now a lighthouse decorated with a chess design. On the seafront, many events are organized (live shows, concerts, theatrical representations, cabaret, sagras and festivals).
Torre Mozza, a few km south of Torre San Giovanni, is also considered a marine of Ugento. The inhabited centre developed around one of the sixteenth-century towers of the defensive system wanted by Carlo V to protect the area from the saracenic attacks. The hamlet overlooks a wide free beach with fine grey sand.
Lido Marini, considered the third marine of Ugento, is located a few km south of Torre Mozza and precedes the first hills of Capo di Leuca. During the summer, this locality is populated by tourists. It is located in a strategic position halfway between Gallipoli and Santa Maria di Leuca and not too far from Torre San Giovanni.
The Ugento's Aercheological Museum, reachable walking through the historical centre, preserves important historical findings such as the bronze statue of Zeus, found in 1961, that became the symbol of Ugento. This staute has great cultural value because it testifies the cultural exchange with the messapian civilization in the past.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, main place of worship of Ugento and episcopal headquarter of the Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca diocese. The present cathedral was built at the beginning of the eighteenth century on the same place where an ancient gothic church was situated before it was destroyed by the saracenic invasion of 1537. It was consacrated and inaugurated in 1745.
Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, dedicated to one of the most famous saints in Italy. The church, dated back to the seventeenth century, has a simple facade with gate characterized by a lintel and windows. The horizontal cornice is interrupted by the stone statue of Sant'Antonio di Padova. Inside there is only one nave with nine altars decorated with paintings by Saverio Lillo. Besides the major altar, there are also the altars of the Immacolata, San Giuseppe, Sant'Antonio di Padova, Crocifisso, Madonna di Costantinopoli, Addolorata, San Francesco d'Assisi and San Domenico. There is a seventeenth-century original pipe organ.
The norman Castle rises on a hill overlooking the hamlet. It was the residence of all the lords that lived in the feud. According to the legend, there was a long tunnel in the basement that led outside in case of need. There is no certainty about the date of its building: many researchers claim that the ground floor is dated back to the roman period, while the upper floor resembles the typical norman fortifications. During the Angevin dominion it was included among the royal castles and was renovated by Carlo I d'Angiò in 1275.
Lido Bora Bora, a modern beach complex suitable for families and young people; Lido Coco Loco, one of the most famous beach clubs in Marina di Ugento; Lido Malibù, family-run beach club characterized by white and fine sand and crystal-clear water; Lido Playa Bianca and Lido Playa del Sol.
