Messina, sicilian province, is located at the northeastern far end of Sicily on the namesake Strait. It was born as a greek colony called Zanacle, then Messana and finally Messina and came to prominence between the late middle age and the second half of the seventeenth century, when it competed with Palermo for the role of county seat. The modern city is characterized by a regular net of wide and linear streets. It is located 95.5 km far from Catania and 223 km from Palermo, surrounded by the ionian coast, the tyrrhenian coast and the Peloritani mountains, and has a big natural (military and commercial) harbour with view on Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria.
Messina is famous for the production of different types of citruses: lemon, orange, tangerine, clementine but also fruit, vegetables, the D.O.C. Faro wine and beer (since 2016). The main fish dishes of its gastronomic tradition are prepared with seafoods, swordfish, salted codfish, mussels, costardelle, neonata and tuna; the meat-based dishes are prepared with pork chops and falsomagro. The typical local desserts are: glazed pignolata, cannoli with ricotta or chocolate, cassata. Other typical products are: focaccia (with endive, unsalted anchovies, black pepper and tuma cheese), "pane alla disgraziata", arancini, "mozzarella in carrozza" (fried), granita (strawberry, lemon, almond, mulberry, chocolate, pistachio nut and coffee with cream) and brioche (very different from the northern-Italy brioches).
Messina's tourist industry has been constantly developing lately. In Messina, many cruises stop and allow the tourists to enjoy its ancient history, culture and natural beauties. This city is full of monuments worth visiting and beach localities on its northern coast, around Capo Peloro, where the famous lighthouse is located.
