Locality
Olbia, called "Terranoa" in the past, is surrounded by wonderful beaches and many archeological sites that can be visited with expert guides. Since the pre-roman age, Olbia has been the main "entrance" to the beauties of the island, that can be easily reached from here: Porto Rotondo, Portisco, Porto Cervo, Capriccioli and the entire Costa Smeralda. In Olbia city, there are many important commercial and sardinian-handicraft companies. Besides, here start the arterial roads and railway stations connected to the most important centers of the island: Sassari, Tempio Pausania, Nuoro and Cagliari.

Places to know and visit
Only 10 minutes away (by car) from the airport there is the central Piazza Regina Margherita. In the ancient part of the city, along Corso Umberto, there are many good restaurants and nice squares where the tourists can enjoy a delicious drink.

Basilica di San Simplicio, the most famous place in Olbia, a pisan/romanic cathedral built with granite from Gallura. The apse hosts two thirteenth-century frescos: the one on the left portrays San Simplicio, Olbia's protector. The festival of San Simplicio, the biggest celebration in Olbia, lasts for three days in may.

The Gulf of Olbia is surrounded by an amazing amphitheater of granite mountains and extraordinary rocky formations sculpted by the wind. The island of Tavolara, with its majestic 564-meter high peak, is located south of the city. It is the perfect place for the sports and scuba-diving lovers, but also to sunbathe on the Spalmatore beach or visit the restaurant "da Tonino": its name was decided by king Carlo Alberto di Sardegna to honor the hunt and the feasts.

Protected marine area of Tavolara, a suggestive coastal area that goes from Capo Ceraso to Cala Finocchio and includes the islands of Tavolara, Molara and Molarotto. An about 15.000-hectar area protected for its environmental value and for the conservation of its bottoms.

Close to the city, there are the beautiful beaches of Pittulongu, towards the Gulf of Aranci. Here are many bays, small inlets and wide beaches like Cala Banana, Sos Aranzos, Cala Sassari and Spiaggia Bianca, ending with Cala Moresca, in front of the island of Figarolo. Going south for about 20 km, there are the long beaches of San Teodoro, famous for its natural sceneries and its active nightlife especially during the summer. In particular, the beaches of Capo Coda Cavallo, Cala Brandinchi, La Cinta and Isuledda cannot be missed. Moving south, there is Budoni with its long beaches with fine white sand and shallow water surrounded by mediterranean scrub and flourishing pinewoods. The most famous beaches of this area are: Agrustos, Cala Budoni and Sant'Anna.

Going north, a few km from Olbia, in Arzachena, there are the most famous beaches of the Costa Smeralda, characterized by white sand and emerald-green water, like Romazzino and Capriccioli in proximity of Porto Cervo. Those who choose to spend their holiday in northern Sardinia must surely visit the suggestive Archipelago of La Maddalena. Embarking in the harbour of Palau it is possible to visit the islands of La Maddalena and Caprera, that hosts the Museo Garibaldi. It is a real paradise, a natural oasis that is definitely worth a visit.
