Policoro is a city located in the fertile plain of Metaponto on the ionian coast, in proximity of the Agri river. It is the third most populated centre in the province of Matera and the second one in order of economic importance. It borders with the municipality of Scanzano Jonico (north, 9 km), the Ionian sea (east, 3 km), Rotondella (south, 23 km) and the territories of Tursi (west, 27 km). It is 65 km far from Matera and 129 km far from Potenza, the regional county seat. It has extremely ancient origins.

The city rises in proximity of two ancient important centres of "Magna Grecia", Heraclea and Siris. During the centuries, it became the feud of many noble families and the current city is located a few steps away from the ruins of Heraclea. Many events are organized every year in Policoro: the "Blues in Town", a summer festival with international artists, born in 2004; "Policoro in Musica", a jazz-music summer festival organized in the heart of the city.

Policoro is also a renowned beach locality with beautiful long sandy shores. The sports lovers cannot miss a visit to the "Riserva Naturale Orientata Bosco Pantano", a protected natural area in the province of Matera established in 1999. This natural site extends for 500 acres and 21 of these acres belong to the WWF: the Oasi WWF Policoro Herakleia, full of trekking paths. There is also the Pantano of Policoro, a wooded area in the plain that represents all that is left of the original Pantano Soprano and Pantano Sottano woods.
