Locality
Rapolano Terme is a small tuscan hamlet, famous for its ancient thermal center (that was already renown during the roman age). There are two thermal springs: the "Terme di San Giovanni", in the heart of the countryside, and the "Antica Querciolaia", near the city center surrounded by the sienese hill.
Besides the two thermal springs, Rapolano is full of natural and archeological places of interest that deserve a visit.
Near the "Terme di San Giovanni" there is the archeological site of Campo Muri: remainings of an etruscan/roman settlement with a votive hole called "Buca delle Fate" (the fairies' hole) that was the place of worship where the thermal water was celebrated.
Near the "Antica Querciolaia" there is the "Parco dell'Acqua", a park dedicated to the travertine created by the thermal water's calcareous deposits. Numerous travertine sculptures can be appreciated while exploring the park.
"Schiena d'Asino" and "La Puzzola", two natural areas created by thermal waters.
The Museum of the Ancient "Grancia", an ancient wheat warehaouse that was recently restored to its original splendor.
The Oil Museum that houses machineries and equipments used by ancient farmers.
Not far from Rapolano Terme there is the hamlet of Modanella with its medieval castle. Modanella was an ancient "Signoria" that is now used as a farm and an agritourism.
Starting from Rapolano Terme, it is possible to explore the surrounding areas by foot or by bike: the "Crete Senesi" can be reached crossing an iron bridge situated on the Ombrone river. A few km far from the city center there are the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, Asciano and Buonconvento.
