Locality
In the last few years, San Teodoro has become on of the most famous tourist villages in the entire Sardinia, a few minutes away from the harbour and the airport of Olbia, in the province of Olbia-Tempio (OT). This wonderful village shares the northeastern sardinian coast with the municipalities of Budoni, Posada and Orosei (south) and Loiri Porto San Paolo, Olbia and the Costa Smeralda (north). It surely is one of the most interesting locations in Sardinia and a visit is strongly recommended. A breathtaking mediterranean scrub with 18 heavenly beaches and many small inlets, some of them only reachable through suggestive paths.
Places to know and visit
The beach of "Cala Brandinchi", one of the most suggestive beaches of the area, can be reached following the state highway that goes to Olbia and turning towards Capo Coda Cavallo. Beacuse of its exotic features, it is also called the "Thaiti of the Mediterranean sea", with fine golden sand and crystal-clear water, surrounded by a wonderful pinewood and numerous wild lilies. The Capo Coda Cavallo, a granite promontory covered in pines and mediterranean scrub that is considered one of the most beautiful landscapes of Sardinia, and the beautiful Island of Tavolara can be admired from here.
The beach of "Lu Impostu", very similar to Cala Brandinchi from which it is divided by a wooded promontory. It has fine white sand and crystal-clear water and is surrounded by a flourishing vegetation (also mimosa).
"Insuledda", wonderful dunes and centuries-old juniper trees surround this little gem that lies south of San Teodoro, near a little salt-water lake that dries out during the summer. Its entire name is Punta dell'Insuledda, and it is the spur that marks the end of the body of water of the Marine Protected area of Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo. There are shallow waters with a sandy bottom but also rocks at its extremities for the snorkeling lovers.
The beach "La Cinta", symbol of San Teodoro, near the city center, is characterized by a very fine and white sand and by crystal-clear shallow water. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. This wide and comfortable beach is suitable for children but offers many activities for the teenagers as well, such as water sports and suggestive walks at sunset.
The San Teodoro basin, in proximity of La Cinta, is surrounded by dunes and vegetation and has a very rich fauna: pink flamingoes, mallards, herons and coots. Many excursions are organized here.
Cala Girgolu, a place that cannot be missed, reachable following the state highway to Olbia and turning right towards the district of Montipitrosu. It is characterised by a long sequence of small white inlets and pink-granite rocks with unique shapes, the scents of the mediterranean scrub and the deep blue of the water. Little paths in the flourishing nature allow the tourists to move from one inlet to another and to appreciate the view on the Island of Tavolara.
The Marine Protected Area of Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo was born in 1997, strongly wanted and supervised by the municipalities of the area (San Teodoro, Loiri Porto San Paolo and Olbia) and established by a decree of the Department of the Environment. The area extends from Punta di Capo Ceraso, near Olbia (north), all the way to Punta di Insuledda (south), including the islands of Tavolara, Molara and Molarotto; it is divided into three areas: A, entire reserve; B, general reserve; C, partial reserve.
The most recent Church of Montipirosu is dedicated to the apostle Sant'Andrea and was built using the citizens' contributions. At first, people wanted to dedicate the church to San Ponziano because of its proximity to the place where the saint was exiled (on the island of Molara, where his relics are kept), but then they decided to honor the citizen who offered the land where it was built, and his name was Andrea.
The Church of San Teodoro, in the heart of the city, was built during the 1770s, then destroyed and rebuilt in the 1950s.
The Church of Straula, built during the first years of the twentieth century, is dedicated to Sant'Antonio, whose relics are preserved in its altar. The country festival is usually organized on the second sunday of june.
