Day 2 Istanbul
Breakfast. In the morning, we will begin with a half-day “Byzantine” tour: We will start by visiting the Süleymaniye Mosque, considered the most beautiful of Istanbul’s imperial mosques, built between 1550 and 1557 by Sinan, the chief architect of the Ottoman golden age.
Then we will head towards the ancient walls of Constantinople, currently known as Mevlana Gate, built by Emperor Theodosius II in the year 413. These solid walls, several stories high and between three and six meters thick, protected the city from attacks by the Goths, Bulgarians, Russians, Arabs, and Turks. The walls were breached only twice, by the Crusaders in 1204 and by Mehmet “The Conqueror” in 1453.
Next, we will visit the Monastery of the Virgin of the Spring. According to historians Procopius and Cedrenus, the church was originally built by Emperor Justinian in the final years of his reign, near a spring formerly known as the “Fountain of Miracles,” located outside the walls of Theodosius II, at the site of today’s Silivri Gate.
The tour ends in Eminönü, once the main entrance to the city and now a lively area that hosts the “Egyptian Market,” also known as the “Spice Bazaar.”
Free afternoon to explore the city, or you can join the optional “Bosphorus” excursion offered by our guide.
Overnight stay.
Day 3 Istanbul
Breakfast. We will depart for a half-day tour of the “Golden Horn”: We will head to the picturesque and colorful neighborhoods of Fener and Balat, protected by UNESCO and considered the first settlements of ancient Constantinople.
Next, we will continue along the shore of the Golden Horn and visit the Iron Church of St. Stephen, a Bulgarian Orthodox church located in a Turkish city, linked to the struggle for ecclesiastical independence in the 1830s and 1840s, and the only iron Orthodox church in the world.
Then we will visit the Grand Bazaar, with over 4,500 shops grouped by specialties such as jewelry, clothing, and more. This is where the tour ends.
Free afternoon to explore the city, or you may join the optional “Classical” excursion proposed by our guide.
Overnight stay.
Day 4 Istanbul → Fethiye
Half board. At the scheduled time, transfer to the airport for the domestic flight (PC 2282 06:35–07:50) to Dalaman. Upon arrival, departure for Dalyan, where we will board a small boat that will take us to the magnificent Iztuzu Beach, famous for being a nesting site for Caretta Caretta turtles.
As the tour begins, we will see the magnificent Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs along the Dalyan River. Free time to enjoy the sea at Iztuzu Beach.
Lunch. Then departure for Fethiye, currently the largest city on the Lycian coast. Upon arrival, visit to the rock-cut necropolis located on the cliffs on the outskirts of the city — its main attraction — where we’ll see stunning temple-tombs, including the Tomb of Amyntas.
Dinner at leisure and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 5 Fethiye → Kemer (Antalya)
Half board. Departure for the ancient city of Patara, once a prosperous maritime and commercial city on the southwestern coast of Lycia, formerly famous for its oracle of Apollo, second in importance only to that of Delphi. The ruins of this ancient city are scattered along the path leading to the beach. Here lies the Colonnaded Street, considered the largest avenue of the ancient city, once lined with shops and ending at the Agora.
Next, we will head toward the coast to board a small boat that will take us to Kekova Bay. Lunch. Sailing along a coast with turquoise waters, we will discover the sunken part of the ancient city of Simena.
Disembarkation and continuation to Antalya. Overnight stay.
(Important note! Due to weather conditions, the boat tour to Kekova Bay may be canceled. In this case, the visit will be replaced with the ancient city of Myra and the Church of Saint Nicholas.)
